Reagan che, il 23 marzo 1983, propone con la sigla SDI (Strategic Defense Iniziative) un sistema di difesa spaziale dotato di satelliti intercettori e distruttori. Il progetto della SDI viene proseguito da Bush senior sotto la denominazione di GPALS (Global Protection Against Limited Strikes) e dalle due amministrazioni Clinton che danno vita al più "compiuto" sistema denominato NMD, ovvero National Missile Defense (23 luglio 1999).
