Con l'adesione ufficiale di altri sette stati ieri l'Alleanza atlantica ha compiuto il suo quinto allargamento e, soprattutto, sottratto anche formalmente sette paesi all'influenza della Russia. Alla Casa Bianca i capi di governo di Bulgaria, Romania, Lituania, Lettonia, Estonia, Slovacchia e Slovenia hanno firmato i trattati di adesione alla Nato, col presidente americano George W. Bush a fare da gran cerimoniere.

RUSSIANS CONCERNED ABOUT NATO'S EXPANSION EASTWARDS

did not sign the conventional armed forces in Europe
(CFE) treaty. He also noted that four countries - new
NATO members (the three Baltic states and Slovenia)
are not parties to the CFE Treaty.

armed forces of the Alliance swelled with 193,300 men.

Bush Signs NATO Expansion Measure
The measure Bush signed, passed by wide margins in
both houses of Congress, authorizes $55.5 million in
military assistance for the seven clearest hopefuls,
although it does not specifically call for NATO
admission for any of the countries.
The aid: Bulgaria, $10 million; Estonia, $6.5 million;
Latvia, $7 million; Lithuania, $7.5 million; Romania,
$11.5 million; Slovakia, $8.5 million, and Slovenia,
$4.5 million.
